Less Is More: Why a Simple CV Wins (Free CV Template Included)
If your CV feels packed with experience, projects, and achievements - you might think that’s a strength. But here’s the truth: the more you add, the harder it is for recruiters to see what actually matters.
A clean, structured, scannable CV gets more traction than a dense one packed with every task you’ve ever done. Why? Because recruiters don’t read - they skim.
1. You Have 7 Seconds to Make an Impression
Recruiters spend, on average, seven seconds scanning a CV before deciding if it’s worth reading in detail. That means structure and readability matter more than length or design.
If your CV looks crowded, uses long paragraphs, or buries key results in walls of text, the best parts of your profile will simply go unnoticed.
2. Cut What Doesn’t Add Value
Think of your CV like a highlight reel, not a documentary.
Ask yourself:
Does this bullet demonstrate a skill relevant to my target role?
Does it show measurable impact or business results?
Would I bring this up in an interview?
If the answer is no - cut it. You’re not deleting achievements; you’re focusing attention on what matters most.
3. Keep What Makes You Easy to Understand
Focus on clarity over clever phrasing. Use straightforward, active language. Replace niche terms with industry-relevant ones recruiters actually search for.
Example:
❌ “Led commercial operations for the meat export industry.”
✅ “Managed international sales operations for perishable goods across 3 markets.”
That’s easier to read, easier to understand, and easier to remember.
4. Format for Readability, Not Design Awards
Stick to a clean layout with clear sections, consistent spacing, and no visual clutter.
Remember - the best CVs don’t impress because of their color or icons; they stand out because they’re effortless to follow.
